Week 2 - 23rd Jan - planning out set making

Gathering some ideas on how to make the house for the exterior set.

I started off by looking at hand made dolls houses

The design above is a Tudor Cottage created by ROBERT STUBBS. I really like the idea of a thatch roof for the cottage but would it possible to get the right materials?

This design is a Victorian Arthur Dollhouse. What interested me with this house is the roof and how it looks like it is made out of the ends of lollipop sticks- which would look rather quirky as a design!

Furniture:

The pieces of furniture above are from dolls houses collections. My main concern about buying already made furniture is that it might be hard to find all the same sized pieces or if they are proportionate. Also, by not hand making the furniture could take away the charm of the animation!

 Environment style:

This shot is from the making of the film Paranorman. The forest environment show here is similar to how I imagined the surrounding forest of the house in the exterior set to be. Very sparse tall tress with very little shrubbery.

A similar design is from the film Nightmare Before Christmas by Tim Burton. I would like to create a similar texture on the trees as used in this scene. Below is corrugated cardboard which I could possibly build the tree trunks out of?

Below is a picture of a hand made model created by artist Sara Ann DiPity.

This style/type of house is much more appealing than the other doll houses. It has way more character and charm. From this I have decided that i will make the structure of the sets from wood and build on top of them using different materials to create a unique and quirky look.
