Week 20 - 24th May - editing stop motion

Putting together all of the stop motion scenes and editing them so everything flows smoothly.

Week 20 - 24th May - Camera memory book

After Katie did the timing of the memory book, I then created the camera movement with in the book.

I used 3 different methods for the movement:

- Keying the transform settings to move the page, then using easy ease to make a smoother movement
- Using a Camera
- Using a camera and parenting it to a null object so it easier to manoeuvre

Week 20 - 24th May - Masking

Masked the felt page design to the beginning stop motion scenes

Test 01:

This is an unmasked test, the page is supposed to the page below. I found it very hard to match up the designs to the stop motion as it moves quite alot.

The finished result is still a little jolty but overall the main character animation takes main focus so hopefully it wont be very noticeable.

Week 19 - 23rd May - Page turn

Creating a page turn for the memory book.

Test 01:

Test 02:

Final:

We both decided that only one page turn would be used for the memory book. It will be used after the first page, this is enough to suggest to the audience that it is a book, if we put a page turn for all of the book it would be become very repetitive.

Katie then masked the page designs on top of this page turn.

Week 19 - 23rd May - Spirit animation

I created a 2D spirit animation to go on top of the beginning scenes in the stop motion.

Process shown below:

Week 19 - 22nd May - Photo manipulation update

I made some slight changes to the photo manipulation animation I created for the last animatic.

I made Arthur and Millie the main focus of movement in the images.

I added in the characters on top so the audience can recognise who is supposed to who in the real photographs.

Final animations:

Week 19 - 22nd May - memory book still

Using a stop motion still I created the book background for the memory book.

Week 19 - 21st May - felt final

Putting the felt page together:

Below are the backgrounds I created for the photos, for the final animation I used an old photo texture to put on top of the frames to create a vintage look.

The final felt animation

Week 19 - 20th May - Millies felt animation

This was my first animation test for Millies felt. This was before i decided to change her design.

Second animation test using the new design

Week 19 - 18th May - Arthurs felt animation tests

Felt animation line test

Updated felt animation

Final coloured felt animation

Week 18 - 13th May - Dust test

I created a dust test for scene 2

Week 19 - 17th May - Day to night

After Katie and I looked through her spirit animation for the end of the stop motion, we found that it was hard to see the delicate animation on top of the stop motion. So we decided to change the ending scenes to night. This also ties in with the memory book as the last shot the audience sees in the book is Arthur alone in London at night.

I was familiar with the technique changing scenes from day to night using After Effects, so thought this would be the most effective way.

A breakdown of stages on how I created the exterior day to night:

1. Original shot

2. Additional forest background

3. Using curves to adjusts colour and contrast to create night look

4. Adding in windows

5. Creative a matte to apply moonlight effect

6. Moonlight effect

 7. Masked in additional moonlight on floor

9. Final shot with spirit dance in window

Other Scenes: Before and After

Week 18 - 16th May - set extension

For the last scene in the end of the stop motion I had to create a set extension as the set was not big enough to fit in the animation of the last dance scene.

Testing out what to put in the set extension

Feedback: All the furniture is in one corner! Looks very strange

Tried to spread out the furniture by putting a bookcase in the shot

Another bookcase example

Finally decided to add a rug to balance everything out - Final shot

Week 18 - 14th May - Masking

As I green screened all of the window for the stop motion i had to mask them out and create windows and backgrounds for them. I had some issues with this, the green screen did not work as there were green shades in the set so the colour did not pick up so well. Also as the stop motion camera moves slightly I had to key in the movement for the window to follow the movement. I tried using the track motion in After Effects but the results were not as effective as I hoped.

Two examples of the windows I created for the stop motion:

Week 18 - 13th May - Cleaning up stop motion

Scene 07 in the stop motion required me to use wire to make the book fall, so cleaned up all the wires in the shot.

Week 19 - 20th May - Millies felt design

As the felt design for Millie was very stylised, I decided to make her look more like Katie's character design for Millie. This made more sense as then the audience can recognise the character!

Week 18 - 12th May - editing stop motion

Editing the opening shot of the stop motion. Keying out the green screen windows of the exterior set and creating windows and adding in extra details to the house.
