Week 2 - 21st Jan - D-Day Museum

We visited the D-Day museum in Portsmouth to gain further knowledge on WW2 and to get some inspiration!

There was one section in particular which both Katie and I found extremely inspiring, which was The Overlord Embroidery.

These designs were created by Sandra Lawrence and her process method was:

1.    Design picture
2.    Block out colour
3.    Tracing overlay
4.    Put on material

Materials:

-       Strong cotton fabric> background
-       Purple encressed weave general background colour (sewn together)
-       Cut out shapes etc
-       Embroidery needles/thread

After seeing these designs we decided that the WW2 section of the memory book would follow this same style.

We did some observational sketches of the designs which inspired us most and noted down some of the techniques used which we could see.

We then went on to create our own version of this style/technique and adapted to our story. I created the main character design which is the old man as a young RAF pilot and Katie created his wife who served as a nurse during the war.
