After having the armature break I need to find a way to create the shape of the character without modelling straight on to the armature. This way if the armature breaks again, I can easily repair the model.
I have designed a sort of body suit jacket for the armature. I will lightly pad out the armature with a hand wrap bandage before putting the body jacket on.
The jacket fastens at the back and through the models legs for extra security.
